Bridges

What is a Bridge?

If a tooth has been lost, a fixed cosmetic dental bridge can be used to “bridge” the gap between two or more adjacent teeth. A specially designed structure incorporating hollow crowns to support the missing tooth is prepared in the dental laboratory. Similarly to crowns and implants, the replacement bridge “teeth” will be matched to the rest of your teeth to give as natural a result as possible, as well as restoring your ability to properly bite, chew and speak.

Bridgework can be constructed from a variety of different materials depending upon the application – your dentist will advise what is most appropriate.

Initially your dentist:

Prepares the teeth that will support the bridge by carefully reshaping them.

Takes an impression of the area, which the dental technician then uses to construct the bridge. The laboratory time is usually 2-3 weeks.

Cements into place a temporary acrylic bridge whilst the permanent replacement is being constructed.

During your second visit your dentist:

Will try in your bridge to ensure that the fit and aesthetics are satisfactory.

Cements the bridge permanently into place. Your dentist or hygienist will show you the best way to care for your new bridge.

It is important that you take good care of your dental bridge to extend its life and maintain the heath of your gums and natural teeth. Daily flossing and brushing, in addition to regular visits to your dentist and hygienist are essential.

What are the benefits?

It can improve the way you look and restore your ability to properly bite, chew and speak.

It can maintain the shape of your face.

Your natural teeth are protected from wear, as the bridge distributes the forces in your bite correctly by replacing the missing teeth. The remaining teeth are also protected from moving or tilting out of place.

It can be colour matched to your natural teeth.

With the correct care and maintenance, a bridge can last for many years.

A bridge restores your smile, almost allowing you to forget you have missing teeth!
