As a parent, taking care of your child’s oral health should be a top priority. Just like adults should visit the dentist regularly to help maintain their teeth, it’s important to take children for dental check-ups and treatments.

Despite being a specialist cosmetic, implant, and orthodontic clinic, Smilemakers is also a family-friendly dental practice in Southampton. Our wide range of treatments includes children’s dentistry and orthodontics.

We believe in setting up healthy smiles for life by giving children access to friendly dentists and education on preventative dental care from a young age.

Seeing a dentist for children will ensure that your child receives the best possible dental care as they grow, from their baby teeth through to their full set of adult teeth.

Whether you’re searching for a local dentist for toddlers or teens, or any age in between, contact us today to book your child’s dental examination.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children’s Dentistry

We encourage parents to book their child’s first dental appointment within six months of their child’s first tooth appearing or by their first birthday (whichever happens first).

This provides an opportunity for young patients to become familiar with the welcoming environment and dental professionals at the practice. Alongside reducing children’s fear of the dentist, routine check-ups also allow us to spot early signs of dental problems and offer treatment and bespoke advice for their unique needs before they worsen.

Even though baby teeth aren’t permanent, it’s still essential to take care of them to prevent tooth decay and gum disease for good oral health. It’s also important for your child to see a dentist when their adult teeth start coming in, as they may need orthodontic care to ensure they develop a healthy bite.

Just as we recommend that adult patients come to see us at least once every 6 months, we would also recommend that parents or guardians bring their children for a general check-up every 6 months. Children’s teeth and jaws can grow and change very quickly, so it’s even more important to monitor their development.

As a family dentist in Southampton, we are happy for parents and children to come to the practice at the same time, so you can all be seen during the same visit.

Simply give us a call on 023 8044 2626 and let us know that you want to book a family dentist appointment for yourself and your child/children, and we will find the next available slot that can accommodate your family – saving you time and stress with fewer trips!

When you take your child to the dentist for their check-ups, we will provide personalised advice on how to clean your baby’s teeth, or how your child should brush their teeth by themselves. To ensure your child grows up with a healthy white smile, we recommend:

  • Brushing your baby’s teeth for them with baby-safe products until they are at least 3 years old
  • Teaching your child how to brush their own teeth and making it a fun, consistent activity
  • Supervising your child brushing their own teeth every day until they are around 8 years old
  • Encouraging a balanced and healthy diet for your child (limiting sugary drinks and sweets)
  • Scheduling children’s dentist appointments every 6 months for general dental examinations

Healthy dental habits start at home, so you should model brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a suitable toothbrush. If you are scared of the dentist yourself, you should try not to pass this fear on to your child – we make our welcoming practice as comfortable as possible for nervous patients of all ages.

At Smilemakers, our dental fees are available to see on our website, alongside our payment plan options to help spread dental care costs into smaller chunks.

We understand the importance of both adults’ and children’s dental health, and with monthly payment options available at our private dental clinic, you can access a healthy and beautiful smile for yourself and your little one without worrying about your budget.
