The 30-minute rule refers to the advice that you should wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything before wearing your aligners again.

During this period, you should have an adequate opportunity to properly clean and dry your teeth before putting your Invisalign aligners back in. It’s important to ensure you remove any food particles or plaque that would otherwise be trapped between the aligner and your teeth and gums.

This can reduce the risk of damaging your teeth, as inserting aligners too early can cause damage to the tooth’s natural enamel. If any residue transfers to the aligners when you reinsert them, it could increase the risk of staining, tooth decay, gum disease, and damage to the materials.

This is why you should also rinse your aligners with water to make sure they’re clean, too, before reinserting them after cleaning your teeth and gums.

By maintaining good oral hygiene, you can achieve a straighter smile without compromising on your favourite meals or activities.

The great news is that with Invisalign, you can still enjoy your favourite foods without major restrictions. 

During this treatment, you can eat and drink anything you want – as long as you take your clear plastic aligners out first, so you don’t damage them.

Here are the answers to some common questions about what to eat with Invisalign: 

• Can you eat with clear aligners? – They are not designed to be worn while eating, so you must take your Invisalign out every time before eating or drinking.  
• What foods can you eat with Invisalign in your mouth? – There are no foods you can eat with Invisalign in. The only thing you can drink while wearing your aligners is plain water, as anything else could stain or erode them and reduce their effectiveness.
• Can I eat soft food with Invisalign on? – No. While soft foods may be less likely to crack or break your aligners, any type of food can stain or warp them.

Typically, your dentist or orthodontist won’t give you a list of what not to eat with Invisalign, because you can simply follow your usual diet and take the aligners out whenever it’s time for a meal (or a drink that isn’t plain still water).
